Fenty Beauty
Media, Gender, and
Self-Representation

Project Description:

The Fenty Beauty project is a critical examination of the company’s social media representation. The work provides a brief analysis and overview of Fenty Beauty’s Instagram page and how it relates to media, gender, and self-representation. It also touches upon the topics of technology, female representation, third wave feminism, consumerism and the gaze explored in Note to Self: The Visual Culture of Selfies in the Age of Social Media by Derek Conrad Murray.

Collaborative Responsibilities:

It was produced in collaboration with Tristin, Nathan, Betty, Wynona and Mikaela for a course at Toronto Metropolitan University titled Technology, Culture and Communication. I was responsible for discussing and writing about the male gaze versus the female gaze.

Thesis Description:

In short, the male gaze is the theoretical understanding that women are represented from the desiring perspective of a heterosexual man. A majority of female representation in the media is for the sole purpose of the sexual pleasure of men, and therefore objectifies them in the process. In contrast, the female gaze is meant to reclaim a woman's presence within the media through her sexuality. It allows women to pose either provocatively or conservatively. The main issue with the female gaze is the fact that women are still placing themselves in the objectifying eyes of male viewers by sexually representing themselves online.
