Franchising in the Restaurant Chain Sector

Burgers on a Crate

Purpose of the Project:

The project is intended to explore the franchise business model. It examines the decision-making, strategic management, legal framework and operational requirements of a franchise system from the franchisor and franchisee viewpoint. The project is intended to simulate the process of “buying” a franchise from the fast-casual restaurant sector. The work was completed for a course at Toronto Metropolitan University, titled Franchising.

Collaborative Responsibilities:

Phase one was completed by Evan, Mark, David, Arshiya and me. I individually wrote the franchise analysis for Boston Pizza and contributed to the decision analysis for our group’s paper alongside Mark. For phase two, I wrote and presented the legal and operational requirements with opening a Freshii restaurant with Evan, Mark, and Arshiya. Lastly, phase three was individually written and consisted of a decision and restaurant analysis between the Boston Pizza and the Pita Pit franchise systems.

Project Description:

Phase one is a decision analysis report examining five fast-casual restaurant chains (i.e., Boston Pizza, Pita Pit, Pizza Hut, Saladworks and Freshii) based on my group’s collective objectives along with a self-administered behavioural assessment to determine our capabilities to manage a franchise store. Phase two is a group research presentation discussing why we chose Freshii as the best fit for our financial and personal goals by supporting our decision with a market analysis alongside a financial, legal and operation pitch presentation. Last but not least, phase three is an individually written business plan to launch a Pita Pit. The Pita Pit franchise system presents a better financial opportunity for a first time franchisee based on the initial investment required. The deciding factor came down to the fact that Pita Pit allows prospective franchisees to find a suitable location within a generous amount of time and presents less restrictive and costly measures to build a unit and conduct operations, unlike Boston Pizza.
